Vertical Slurry Pump Full Introduction

Vertical Slurry Pump Full Introduction

Vertical Slurry Pump Full Introduction
Structural Composition

The whole pump is divided into 5 modules from top to bottom:

1. Vertical Driving Motor: Flange-mounted vertical motor connected by coupling; belt drive is optional. The motor keeps away from slurry for safe operation.

2. Support Plate / Mounting Flange: Fixed on the cover of slurry tank, bears the whole pump weight and isolates water vapor inside the tank.

3. Extended Transmission Shaft Assembly: Alloy steel long shaft with customizable submerged length from 1m to 3m. Extended shaft version is equipped with guide bearing requiring low-pressure clean water flushing.

4. Bearing Assembly: Grease-lubricated cartridge bearing with independent oil chamber, protected from slurry contamination for long service life.

5. Submerged Wetted Components (Core Wear-resistant Parts)

    - Semi-open impeller with auxiliary stirring blades to break sediment at tank bottom and prevent clogging

    - Volute, front & back liners, suction strainer

    - Two common materials:

      - Metal type: High-chromium wear-resistant alloy A05, resistant to large particles and severe abrasion for mine slurry

      - Rubber-lined type: Natural rubber / polyurethane, anti-corrosion for fine particle acidic & alkaline slurry

Core Structural Advantage: No External Shaft Seal

The pump body works fully under liquid level, requiring no mechanical seal or packing seal. It completely eliminates slurry leakage and bearing damage caused by sand ingress, a common fault of horizontal slurry pumps. It can operate stably even under low liquid level and insufficient feeding conditions.

Working Principle

The motor drives the long shaft and underwater impeller to rotate at high speed via centrifugal force to convey two-phase solid-liquid medium. The impeller stirs and sucks sediment slurry at tank bottom; slurry gains pressure energy inside the volute and discharges upward through external outlet pipeline. The stirring blades at the bottom of impeller continuously agitate sediment to avoid solid accumulation and blockage. It features strong self-priming performance with no priming water or foot valve required before startup.

Main Advantages
1. Small Floor Space: Vertical layout installed directly on tank cover, no pump house or heavy concrete base required, ideal for limited-space sites.

2. Self-priming without Priming Water: Impeller stays submerged all the time for instant startup and simple operation.

3. Zero Leakage Risk: No exposed submerged seal, fewer frequent packing / mechanical seal replacements to cut maintenance cost.

4. Self-stirring Anti-sediment Design: Built-in stirring blades for sludge cleaning at the bottom of sedimentation tanks and material tanks.

5. Wide Medium Adaptability: Optional metal or rubber lining to meet both wear-resistant and anti-corrosion demands.

6. Stable Operation & Low Vibration: Concentrated vertical gravity center with low noise under low-speed working conditions.

7. Customizable Submerged Depth: Standard shaft length ranges 1–2m; extended transmission shaft available for deep tanks.

Disadvantages
1. The whole pump needs to be lifted out of the slurry tank for maintenance, more complicated than horizontal slurry pumps.

2. Guide bearings of extra-long shafts (>2.5m) need continuous flushing water with matched pipelines.

3. Less suitable for heavy-duty working conditions with large flow rate and ultra-high head compared with horizontal AH / ZGB slurry pumps.

General Performance Parameter Range
- Inlet & outlet diameter: 20 ~ 650 mm

- Flow rate: 2.3 ~ 9100 m³/h

- Head: 6 ~ 60 m

- Allowable slurry concentration: ≤60% by weight for mine slurry; ≤45% for ash slurry & sludge

- Passable solid particles: Metal version for angular ore and coal slag; rubber version only for fine rounded particles

Applicable Industries & Media
1. Mineral Processing: Flotation overflow, tailing tank underflow, thickener ore slurry

2. Coal Washing: Coal water slurry, heavy medium tank, coal sludge extraction in sedimentation tanks

3. Thermal Power Plants: Ash tank, desulfurization gypsum slurry, ash flushing wastewater

4. Environmental & Municipal Engineering: Sewage plant sludge, river dredging sludge, printing & dyeing chemical sludge

5. Metallurgy & Building Materials: Steel mill iron oxide scale water, cement raw slurry, phosphoric acid chemical acidic slurry

6. Other Fields: Oil refining residue, paper black liquor, sediment sludge from food industry

Comparison: Vertical Slurry Pump vs Horizontal Slurry Pump

| Items | Vertical Submersible Slurry Pump | Horizontal Slurry Pump (AH / ZGB) |

| Installation | Vertically mounted on tank cover, small footprint | Horizontal floor installation, independent pump house required, large space occupation |

| Shaft Seal | No external shaft seal, zero slurry leakage | Packing / mechanical seal equipped, easy to wear and leak |

| Startup Condition | No priming water needed, self-priming | Must fill priming water and install foot valve |

| Typical Application | Sludge extraction at tank bottom, medium flow & medium head | Long-distance transportation, large flow & high head, heavy-duty coarse ore slurry |

| Maintenance Difficulty | Whole pump lifting out of tank required, complicated maintenance | Disassemble pump directly on ground, easy maintenance |

| Total Cost | Lightweight pump body, low civil engineering investment | Heavy pump casing, high supporting civil construction cost |

Key Selection Guidelines
1. Confirm tank depth to determine shaft length; tanks deeper than 2m adopt extended shaft with guide bearing flushing system.

2. Select high-chromium metal wetted parts for large abrasive particles (ore, steel slag); rubber-lined type for fine particle acid & alkali slurry.

3. Reserve 10% margin for flow rate and head to avoid motor overload.

4. Install enlarged suction strainer and wide flow channel impeller if medium contains massive hard solids.

5. Choose heavy-duty ZJL series for 24-hour continuous operation; light-duty YZ series for intermittent sludge cleaning.

Daily Maintenance Instructions
1. Continuously supply low-pressure clean flushing water to long-shaft guide bearings to prevent sand jamming.

2. Refill grease into bearing housing regularly every 500 running hours.

3. Flush pump cavity with clean water before shutdown to avoid slurry drying and impeller blockage.

4. Lift the whole pump out of liquid level for long-term shutdown, clean all wetted parts and coat anti-rust oil.
